Murdoch University has, from its foundation in 1974, been a university of difference. Established as the second university in WA, Murdoch has always been associated with environment and conservation, social justice and inclusion, and providing pathways into and through a university education for people who had previously been excluded.
Murdoch University, a research-led institution, has experienced significant growth in grant income, increasing from $19 million in 2015 to over $30 million in 2023.
With this growth came greater compliance requirements, requiring strict adherence to legal, safety, and data security guidelines. The existing process for assessing research project compliance and risk management was complex and inconsistent, creating inefficiencies and limiting university-wide oversight.
The university needed a standardised digital solution to streamline compliance, enhance reporting, and improve research governance.
ProcessPath came on board with an approach rooted in collaboration and human-centric design.
We worked with the university to develop the Research Initiation Application, simplifying research project registration and compliance assessment.
The application enables investigators to create and submit research projects for approval, with built-in guidance and tailored compliance obligations based on project details. It also allows endorsers and the Research & Innovation Office to review, approve or reject submissions, supporting a structured and transparent approval process.
This solution enhances oversight, ensures alignment with regulatory requirements, and streamlines administrative workflows, particularly for smaller research projects.
The digitised approval process improves efficiency and accuracy by standardising compliance assessments across the university. Researchers benefit from clearer guidance, while the Research & Innovation Office gains better oversight and risk management capabilities.
By enhancing visibility and streamlining approvals, Murdoch University ensures greater research integrity, operational efficiency, and compliance with funding and governance requirements.
